Astigmatomy, correction of astigmatism, elimination of astigmatism

Astigmatomy is surgical procedure of astigmatism elimination.

The operation is about making strictly dosed and calculated limbal relaxing incisions on the cornea periphery, which relaxes the stronger meridian of the cornea and as the result eliminates astigmatism.

Till recently this procedure has been performed manually, but today special equipment for astigmatomy has appeared in Ukraine. It is the arcutom of Pallicaris. It is already more than 15 years that this device has been successfully used for astigmatism correction in the whole world.

The medical centre AILAS, following its principles of introducing innovative technologies in ophthalmology, has certified the arcutom of Pallicaris in Ukraine and is the first to use it for astigmatism correction.

The arcutom of Pallicaris is a sensitive device, equipped with special diamond microblades. The design of the device enables to perform limbal relaxing incisions on exactly calculated depth and in exactly required meridians with highest accuracy.

The operation of astigmatomy is indicated for:

! people with high degree of astigmatism, which cannot be eliminated with the help of laser sight correction (astigmatism of more than 6 dioptres);

! people suffering from astigmatism and having thin cornea, in which cases laser sight correction is impossible;

! people suffering from mixed astigmatism, as astigmatomy has absolute indications;

! people, preparing for the lens exchange operation, if they suffer from astigmatism;

Astigmatomy is indicated not only to adults, but also to children if they don’t stand astigmatism correction by glasses.

Astigmatism elimination in children can prevent development of ambliopia (firm and irreversible sight deterioration because of fail to use or incomplete use of the eye in the visual process).

The procedure is performed in the out-patient conditions; it takes about 5 minutes for one eye, and is completely painless.

Already on the next day after the procedure the patients notice their sight improvement, which comes to complete astigmatism elimination within a month.
